Iahu, December 10, 1982

From the first issue of Iahu:

“Last [academic] year Iahu was published in conjunction with Hermes. [October 13, 1981] is our first solo issue. Why have we chosen to publish separately? To put it simply, we feel the time is right to fulfill the growing need of women at Wesleyan to have an outlet for written expression devoted entirely to the concerns of women.”

“The existence of an independent feminist newspaper is an affirmation to ourselves as women. We need the opportunity to work, write and produce together. We are committed to skill sharing among ourselves as the editorial collective of Iahu as well as between the paper and the women’s community at Wesleyan.”

“Iahu is an open forum where all women can publish their creative work, academic work, and political ideas. These three areas are interconnected and we therefore feel that they must be integrated. As we are dedicated to the exchange of knowledge and ideas we have no intention of dictating political opinion. We anticipate a broad range of feminist writings. Finally, we want to stress that Iahu is our voice, the voice of the women’s community at Wesleyan; and that if it is to flourish we must be unafraid to speak.”
