The Stephen K. Bailey mayoral scrapbook is a record of Mayor Stephen K. Bailey’s time as mayor of Middletown, CT as publicized by newspapers which focuses on building projects, Middletown’s finances, and dealings with Wesleyan University, including a “near riot” by Wesleyan students. It consists entirely of clippings pasted into a scrapbook, with dates penciled in.

Biographical / Historical

Stephen K. Bailey attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar before moving on to receiving his Ph.D. in Government from Harvard. Bailey had an extensive teaching career with time not only at Wesleyan but also Princeton, Syracuse and Harvard. In the late 1940s, he served on the first Hoover Commission on US Government Organization. During his time as an educator at Wesleyan, Bailey also served as the Mayor of Middletown.

Stephen Bailey passed away in 1982 at the age of 65 in Massachuttess where he was Keppel Professor of Education and Administration at Harvard.
