Scope and Contents

The New England Association of Chemistry Teachers records consists of materials such as institutional records such as meeting minutes, annual reports, treasurers reports, financial records, constitution and bylaws, and member lists and forms. Other materials present are newspaper clippings, member’s papers, summer conference sheets and pamphlets, photographs and NEACT publications. Member papers included texts by prominent chemists Rufus Williams, Wilhelm Segerblom and Lyman Newell who served as NEACT’s first president. A bulk of the collection can be found in the publication series with issues of the NEACT meeting reports, newsletters and journals. Topics that can be found within the collection are United States Chemistry education, professional development, chemistry publications, and early chemistry education history.

Each subseries has been arranged to the folder level in chronological order. Subseries that are not in chronological order were kept in the original order they were received. The series are: Series I. Administrative records, Series II. Membership records, Series III. Educational work and outreach, Series IV. Summer Conferences, Series V. Publications.

Biographical / Historical

The New England Association of Chemistry Teachers was founded in 1898 and incorporated in 1910. Today’s membership includes college, high school, and middle school chemistry teachers. The aim of NEACT is to help promote the learning of chemistry. Prominent members of the organization included chemists Rufus P. Williams and Wilhelm Segerblom who created key foundational texts in chemistry education.
