Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a run of Permanent Correspondence (sometimes called “Permanent Files”) organized alphabetically, followed by an alphabetical list of file folders. Major subjects include the proposed idea for a coordinate college at Long Lane, the origins of the Honors College, as well as the College of Letters/Social Studies/Quantitative Studies. Also files on the MAT program, academic freedom, and George Davison, among others.

Biographical / Historical
President McConaughy assumed the office at Wesleyan in 1925 at the age of 37. He would serve the university until 1943. President Butterfield would follow McConaughy. He would become the longest-serving president in Wesleyan history, resigning in 1967.

Wesleyan University Office of the President McConaughey and Butterfield records contain materials transferred from the president's office in 1979. They consist of a combination of President McConaughey and President Butterfield's records.
Arrangement
Permanent correspondence folders for each letter are alphabetized within each folder. Other files are roughly organized by date. Refoldered in July 2009. Non “permanent correspondence” files were alphabetized. Duplicates discarded.
