Biographical / Historical

The Commons Club at Wesleyan was founded in 1898 and became a secret order with its own ceremonies, handshake, etc. in 1905. In 1917, the group established itself on an equal basis with other campus fraternities. After petitioning, the club succeeded in 1928 in becoming a local chapter of the national Sigma Chi fraternity. In the fall of 1959, the Wesleyan chapter of Sigma Chi withdrew from the national fraternity and resumed its earlier name of Commons Club. In 1969, the Commons Club ceased exisiting as a fraternity and its house became a college residence hall.
