Scope and Contents

The David Redden papers include manuscripts, correspondence, notes, Students for a Democratic Society materials, Wesleyan Council of New York Program Committee meeting minutes, journals and pamphlets, and newspapers. The collection includes materials predominantly related to the founding of the Wesleyan University chapter of Students for a Democratic Society during the 1968-1969 academic year, as well as materials related to student anti-war activities at Wesleyan and at several other regional institutions of higher education.

Biographical / Historical

David N. Redden was born in 1949 in Canton, China (present-day Guangzhou). Redden spent much of his youth in Rome and London where his father was American Consul General and he received his high school diploma from St. Stephen’s School in Rome. He then studied art history at Wesleyan University, earning the B.A. in 1972. While at Wesleyan, he was an organizer for the campus chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, a member of Alpha Delta Phi, and participated in various anti-Vietnam War protests. He spent the entirety of his career, from 1974 to 2016, at Sotheby’s where he was Vice-Chairman and Sotheby’s longest serving auctioneer.
