Scope and Contents

The House Carpenter is an old Scottish ballad originally titled James Harris or The Daemon Lover. Everybody sings it a little differently. The version presented in this book is the one that Joan Baez sings. This book was made by Chris Altschuler in May 1982 at the Wesleyan University print shop. The text was set in 18 point Caslon and the illustrations were cut in linoleum blocks. There are only 6 of these books the world.

These words from Donald Barthelme were given a body by Steve Okun in the print shop at Wesleyan University during the Spring of 1982. They fell together out of various sizes and styles of Helvetica monotype; each lette and each space an individual piece, each one carefully assembled by hand in order to form this text.
