Biographical / Historical

The Phi Gamma chapter of Alpha Chi Rho was established at Wesleyan University in 1911. An originally religious fraternity that wished to restrict membership to Christians, in the 1950s, Wesleyan students began to expand membership to include Jewish and African American students. In 1958, all members of the Phi Gamma chapter were suspended from the national organization for their failure to comply with Alpha Chi Rho ritual codes. In 1959, the chapter voted unanimousy to leave Alpha Chi Rho and start a new, inclusive fraternity called Esse Quam Videri (EQV) on campus.
