Scope and Contents

The Albert Mann papers contain materials pertaining Professor Albert Mann and his time at Wesleyan including materials related to performances put on by Wesleyan and Connecticut theater groups, to Albert Mann’s involvement with Psi Upsilon, a Wesleyan fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, another Wesleyan fraternity, and the Skull and Serpent Society and to Albert Mann’s work as a professor at Wesleyan University (some of which is in French) including a trip to France. The materials contained are relevant beyond their relation to Albert Mann, containing records of the theater scene at Wesleyan University and Connecticut, records of Psi Upsilon membership in the early 1950s and of Skull and Serpent initiations in 1931 and 1932 as well as reports from Psi Upsilon to its alumni, documents related to event planning, fund raising and administrative tasks for Psi Upsilon, Phi Beta Kappa and the Skull and Serpent Society, and records of the Cie Gle Transatlantic French Line’s voyage between New York and Le Havre in 1930. The papers consist of programs for performances and events at Wesleyan University and from Prof. Albert Mann’s trip on the Cie Gle Transatlantic French Line, playbills and advertisements for performances at Connecticut theaters, clippings, correspondence, memoranda, handwritten notes, invitations, the 1947 Phi Beta Kappa handbook for new members, Phi Beta Kappa annual meeting agenda, annual reports, lists of passengers on the Cie Gle Transatlantic French Line, a guidebook to Florence and Paris, postcards, and dinner menus for the Cie Gle Transatlantic French Line.

Biographical / Historical

Albert Mann was a graduate of Wesleyan in 1906. He would later return to the univeristy as a professor in French. He taught for thirty years until his retirement in 1952. Mann passed away in 1962 at the age of 78.
