Charles F. Rice (class of 1872) diaries
Scope and Contents
Three small-format diaries, 1870-1872, record the Wesleyan University undergraduate’s social, intellectual, and spiritual life both on campus and at home in Springfield, Massachusetts. Rice’s entries are typically brief and generally lack detailed observation. Still, the reader gains a good picture of Rice’s actions and values.
An entry may comment on the weather, note books borrowed from the library, remark on activities with friends, record the sermon or lecture title, announce attendance at church service. Occasionally, Rice offers some enticing details, “Mase and I hunted for bed bugs. We found 26 in my bed and 6 in his.” (25 May 1872)
