Biographical / Historical
In 1900, Colonel Clarence S. Wadsworth began plans for a summer residence in the hills of western Middletown. 500 acres of Long Hill were designed in the tradition of a working landscape. In 1941, a portion of the land was given to the state for use as a public park. In 1947 the property was owned by the Religious of our Lady of the Cenacle. In 1986 the property was sold to developers and fell into disrepair. In 1994, Middletown gained ownership of the property and invested $5.8 milliom into restoring the property which today has become a center for ceremonial and cultural activities. The Friends of Long Hill is a nonprofit group that supports the park and mansion and promotes its public use.
