Scope and Contents
Two binders of correspondence from the 1940s, and 11 records (78rpm) donated by James L. McConaughy III, his grandson. There are 5 records from his memorial service (double-sided), 2 from his (gubernatorial?) acceptance speech (single-sided), and 4 labeled "Harold Mitchell" (single-sided). (Harold Mitchell was the Chairman of the State Republican Central Committee.)

Biographical / Historical
Born in 1887, James L. McConaughy was only 37 when he was elected president of the University in 1925. before coming to Middletown, McConaughy graduated from Mr. Hermon School and Yale University. He taught English and education before being elected president of Knox College in 1918. During his tenure, the Alumni Athletic Building, Hall laboratory, Olin Library, Shanklin Memorial Laboratory and Harriman Dormitory were built. During his time as univeristy president, McConaughy also served as lieutenant governor of Connecticut from 1939 to 1941. In September 1942 he took a leave of absence to become president of United China Relief and resigned from Wesleyan in 1943. McConaughy would be elected governor of Connecticut in 1947, serving until his death in March 1948.
