Biographical / Historical
James S. Griffing was born in Oswego, New York in 1822. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan in 1852. After leaving Middletown, Griffing was appointed a Methodist missionary in Wyandotte, Kansas in 1854. Between 1856 and 1882, Griffing serrved at numerous congregations thoughout Kansas and Nebraska. Rev. James S. Griffing died on April 3, 1883 and is buried in Manhattan, Kansas.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Collection of original documents donated by William J. Griffing. Mr. Griffing donated a collection of photocopies of additional documents, including portions of J.S. Griffing's journal (which he still owns) to the Archives in the past. Those items are housed in the J.S. Griffing vertical file.
