Biographical / Historical

Joe Webb Peoples joined the faculty of Wesleyan in 1935 as chair of the geology depatment. During World War II, Peoples served as assistant chief geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey and in 1946, after returning to Wesleyan, he was made a commissioner of the Connecticut State Geological and Natural History Survey, becoming the organization's director in 1960. In the 1950's, he joined the International Cooperation Administration to train geologists in the Philippines. One of People's accomplishments includes ensuring that dinosaur tracks discovered on state property in 1967 were not destroyed. This left to the federal governement to declare the area a Natural National Historic Landmark.
