The collection consists of a list of Joseph Hewitt’s publications, a bulletin for a 1909 church service at Wesleyan University, reprinted articles and book reviews by Joseph Hewitt including multiple editions of The Classical Weekly, clippings, an written piece titled “The Bowdoin Faculty 1893-1897” with correspondence attached, a hand-written translation of Virgil’s Aeneid by Joseph Hewitt, a script for a speech to alumni, drafts and a history of “Cannon” at Wesleyan (1922-38) prepared by Joseph Hewitt shortly before his death.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph William Hewitt was born in England in 1875. He would receive an A.B. and an M.A. from Bowdoin. He would go on to receive his Ph.D in 1902 from Harvard. He began his teaching career at Wesleyan in 1905.

Hewitt specialized in Greek language and religion. He would serve as Dean of freshman from 1925 to his death in 1938. During his tme at Wesleyan, Hewitt served as president of the Middletown Board of Education.

In 1903, Hewitt married an Evelyn S. Clark.
