Paul Horgan collection
Scope and Contents
The collection includes a variety of records documenting the life and career of American author Paul Horgan and span the years between 1956 and 1995. The records include correspondences between Horgan and his friends, family, and colleagues; sketches by Horgan; typescripts of Horgan's early work; general ephemera. The ephemera specifically includes records such as postcards (blank and written), placecards, photographs, programs, business cards, invitations, additional letters, and the program and eulogies from Horgan's memorial service. The correspondences were donated from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Russel G. D'Oench. The ephemera was transferred by Shari Swanson from Horgan's library, donated by his estate.

Biographical / Historical
Paul Horgan (b. 1903, d. 1995) was an award-winning author of American literature. He was a native of Buffalo, New York and also lived in New Mexico. Horgan's first novel, The Fault of Angels, was published in 1933 and received the Harper Prize. After serving in World War II, Horgan was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1947. He was the recipient of two Pulitzer Prizes, first in 1955 for his book Great River: The Rio Grande in North American History, and again in 1976 for his book Lamy of Santa Fe. Horgan served for five years as the Director of the Center for Advanced Studies at Wesleyan University, and was later was named a permanent author-in-residence at the University as well.

Abstract
The collection includes records amassed and created by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Paul Horgan, spanning between the years of 1956 and 1995.
Arrangement
The Paul Horgan collection was originally received in three separate collections-- Paul Horgan letters and artwork, Paul Horgan typescripts, and Paul Horgan ephemera. These three collections were combined into one to make the Paul Horgan collection. The original folder organization of each collection was maintained, however the ephemera collection was received in one folder with additional loose, unfoldered records. The foldered ephemera and unfoldered ephemera were combined into one folder.
