Scope and Contents

This collection consists of a scrapbook containing printing specimens of Paul Krumm's work for Pelton & King, and one 5” Hollinger box containing other material relating to his life and interests.

Folio scrapbook includes: “Specimens of printing . . . designed and set by hand in the office of Pelton & King, Middletown, Conn., by Paul O. Krumm, covering a period of over 22 years, from June 8m 1903 to October 24, 1925.” Contains about 400 specimens including jobs for high and grammar schools, businesses, churches and about 68 for Wesleyan.

Biographical / Historical

Paul Otto Krumm was born in New York in 1882. Because of family hardships, he and three siblings spend the years 1893-1899 in the Massachusetts Lutheran orphanage at Brook Farm, which had earlier housed R.W. Emerson’s experimental Transcendental Community. Krumm apprenticed in the printshop there, learning the trade that eventually brought him to Middletown. He was employed by job printers Pelton and King from 1903 to 1925, when he joined the Middletown Press where he remained until his retirement in 1959. He died in Middletown on 2 January 1979.

Abstract

Paul Otto Krumm, (1882-1979), was a printer who worked at Pelton & King printers and bookbinders from 1903-1925, and then at the Middletown Press until 1959. This collection consists of one archival box of general material relating to his life and interests and a 100-page scrapbook with specimens of print jobs he did for Pelton's during his time there. This includes many programs for local events, business cards and advertisements for local businesses and items printed for Wesleyan.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Krumm collection was delivered to the Wesleyan University Library on 6 June, 1997 by his son Gerald F. Krumm and his wife, daughter of Eugene Clark who taught Romance Languages at Wesleyan from 1916 to 1928.
