Scope and Contents

The Geology department records were from three file cabinet drawers from the Earth and Environmental Studies building. The collection includes the bibliography reference cards from William North Rice, notes and observations on geological materials, museum inventories, and museum bills. Also included are Sawyer Reed Brockunier's geological works and notes from seminars at Yale University, geology department lab books.

Biographical / Historical

A majority of documents in the collection pertain to the Wesleyan Museum of Natural History which was in existence from 1871-1957. The museum was focused on ethnographic and archeological objects. Materials came from a number of sources including faculty and student expeditions, donations, purchases and exchanges with other museums such as the Smithsonian. Materials in this collection also include reference materials belonging to William North Rice who served as curator of the museum for a number of years while at Wesleyan. Rice was a professor of geology at the university beginning in 1868.

Abstract

The Geology department records consist of a broad range of materials belonging to the geology department and the Wesleyan Museum from the late 1800s to the 1920s.

The collection has been left in the original order in which they were received. They are arranged according to the corresponding file drawer in which they were removed.
