Biographical / Historical

Henry Dreyfuss Brant (1913-2008) was a composer who was noteworthy for acoustic special music; positioning groups of performers in specific locations, both on stage and throughout the concert hall. In 2002 Brant was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his composition, Ice Field. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and received two Guggenheim Fellowships. Brant was awarded an honorary doctorate from Wesleyan University in 1998. Brant was born in Montreal to American parents but moved to New York in 1929. He was a musical polymath who composed scores for movies, radio, ballet and jazz, as well as classical music. He taught at Columbia University and Juilliard and taught 24 years at Bennington College. He died at the age of 94 in Santa Barbara, California.

Arrangement

This collection is unprocessed. In addition to the original 2011 accession, there were two additions: 2017-027 and 2018-053. These have not been inventoried.
