The papers of John Spencer Camp are primarily composed of manuscripts of complete scores. Also included are Song of the Winds, complete manuscript score bound in 1 volume. Includes Camp, John S. Song of the Winds – Ballad for Mixed Chorus, Soprano Solo (Obligato) and Orchestra or Piano. Op. 5. New York: Edward Schuberth & Co., n.d. Biographical / Historical

John Spencer Camp was born in Middletown, CT on January 3, 1858.

Camp would graduate from Wesleyan in 1878 and receive a Master of Arts in 1881. In 1882 he was the organist at the Park Congregational Church in Hartford, moving on to Center Church in Hartford in 1906. In 1921 he would become director of the Austin Organ Company.

In 1921, Trinity College awarded Camp a doctorate in Music. He would receive a second doctorate from Wesleyan in 1933. Throughout his professional career Camp was the founder of the American Guild of Organists as well as President of the Connecticut Music Teachers' Guild in 1898. He also served as the conductor of the Hartford Philharmonic Orchestra. John Spencer Camp passed away in February 1946. To this day Wesleyan has a John Spencer Camp Professorship of Music.

Accession 1999-87, a gift of the Hartford Public Library, consists of 4 boxes of scores and music manuscripts(see attached listing). HPL has retained all printed copies of Camp’s works for their collection. Accession 2004-55 – Added to Box 4
