Biographical / Historical

C. [Charles] Wilbert Snow was a man of great intellect and a restless spirit. He was born on Whitehead Island, Maine in 1884 and went from this remote beginning to a varied career that spanned lobster fisherman in Maine, reindeer agent in Alaska, published poet and firm friend of Robert Frost, and Deputy Governor of Connecticut. Wilbert Snow Elementary School in Middletown, CT is named for him. He held teaching positions at 7 institutions of higher education, including 31 years at Wesleyan.* He was the father of 5 sons, one of whom died at age 14. His autobiography, Codline’s Child, published in 1974 by Wesleyan, is named for the midwife who delivered him.

Abstract

C. [Charles] Wilbert Snow was a man of many talents including poet, author, educator, politician. These papers primarily represent the 31 years he taught at Wesleyan and his concomitant activites during that time.

Arrangement

Series I: Alphabetical Boxes, describes the contents of cartons received from the family in 1979. Box X contains a copy of Snow's autobiography received earlier.

Series II: Numbered Boxes, describes the contents of 4 file cabinets containing Snow's papers that were rehoused in 1983.

Series III: Not Boxed, contains items such as scrapbooks, audiorecordings, ephemera, and two manuscript copies of Snow's autobiography.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The bulk of the Wilbert Snow papers were received from his family after his death; transferred to Olin Library in May 1979.
